In Nunavut, each of our 25 communities can choose whether to allow, restrict or prohibit liquor in their municipality. Community members make this choice by voting in plebiscites.
The NULC supports this system of local control by respecting each community’s choice. The Commission will not ship liquor to prohibited communities, and will only ship liquor to individuals in restricted communities if they meet their local requirements, which usually involve having a local Alcohol Education Committee approve individual orders.
Liquor rules differ across communities. It is your responsibility to understand and follow each community’s rules, especially when travelling between communities.
Adults who wish to import liquor into Nunavut can purchase an import permit. These permits allow you to bring in alcohol from other Canadian jurisdictions, and are useful when:
ALCOHOL TYPE | FEE PER LITRE |
---|---|
BEER | $0.56 |
COOLERS OR CIDER | $0.59 |
SPIRITS | $3.75 |
WINE | $2.00 |
